The Baggy Green Test cap of Australian cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman has set new records in the world of sports memorabilia. This historic cap, worn by Bradman during the 1947-48 series against India, was recently sold at auction for an astounding $390,000 (Rs 2.14 crore). With auction fees, the price soared to $479,700 (Rs 2.63 crore).
Bradman wore this cap during his last Test series on home soil, where he showcased extraordinary batting prowess. In just six innings, he scored 715 runs at an astonishing average of 178.75, including three centuries and a double century.
Who Received Bradman’s Cap as a Gift?
This rare and iconic artifact was gifted by Bradman to Pankaj “Peter” Kumar Gupta, the Indian tour manager of the 1947-48 series. Bonhams, the auction house responsible for the sale, hailed the cap as a direct link to Bradman’s illustrious career. Within minutes of the auction starting, bids skyrocketed, surpassing Rs 2 crore in just 10 minutes.
Bradman: The King of Double Centuries
Bradman’s records in cricket remain unparalleled. Among his many achievements, he holds the record for the most double centuries in Test cricket, having scored 12 in just 52 matches. Despite the evolution of the game and frequent double centuries in modern cricket, no player has come close to breaking this feat.
Known as “The Don,” Bradman remains the gold standard of cricketing excellence. His legacy continues to inspire fans and players alike. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 92.
