Hockey relationships have a funny way of coming back around. They drift, they fray, then suddenly somebody re-ties the knot. With the New Jersey Devils relieving Tom Fitzgerald of his duties and a new GM on the way, Sheldon Keefe’s future looks shaky. If he’s let go, could he reunite with Kyle Dubas in Pittsburgh?
Dubas and Keefe Share a Long History of Partnership
They’ve got history. Dubas, as a young leader, first trusted Sheldon Keefe with the Soo Greyhounds, and it worked. They seem to share a brain about player development, what it takes to win, and the kind of structure needed to play successful NHL hockey. When Dubas moved up to become the Maple Leafs GM, he brought Keefe along to Toronto.
That kind of shared track record matters. It’s not just nostalgia; it’s shorthand for “these two know how to get things done together under pressure.”
The Penguins Are in a Strange Middle Ground
Pittsburgh right now is in that awkward middle ground: not a full rebuild, not an elite juggernaut. They need a coach who can impose structure, keep a talented roster accountable, and steady the ship on nights when nothing’s clicking.
Keefe fits that bill. He’s detail-oriented, demands structure, and can get players to buy in — basically exactly what a Dubas-led front office would want if the goal is to squeeze more out of the current core without a total teardown.
Keefe and Dubas Would Be a Low-Friction Reunion
The practical upside of pairing them is low friction. Dubas hires someone he trusts; Keefe joins a GM who understands his methods and won’t micromanage. That shared language speeds up implementation. There’s less awkward micro-managing, fewer philosophical clashes, and more immediate adjustments in how the team plays and develops younger pieces.
Of course, none of this is guaranteed. Keefe is still behind the Devils’ bench, and New Jersey could decide to keep him. And Pittsburgh has options, budget considerations, and its own internal politics. But if the Devils do move on, Keefe-to-Pittsburgh stops feeling wild and starts feeling tidy — a sensible reunion rather than a headline-grabbing stunt.
The Soo Connection Has Been Tight for a Long Time
The Soo connection pays dividends more often than people admit. The NHL chases the next shiny idea, but there’s a lot of value in relationships that already work. If Dubas and Keefe end up reunited, it won’t be theatrical so much as practical: two guys who know how to collaborate and want to build something together.
Keep an eye on the rumour mill this summer — that old slinky might just stretch from New Jersey to Pittsburgh.
