Eden Gardens to undergo a transformative redevelopment.

Known globally for its rich heritage and electrifying atmosphere, Kolkata’s Eden Gardens is poised to undergo a transformative redevelopment. Spearheaded by the architectural firm Populous, the actual construction will commence immediately following the 2026 IPL season.

The overarching goal of the project is to create an architectural marvel that significantly enhances seating capacity while paying homage to the Eden Gardens’ vibrant history. To achieve this through a smart, phased approach, existing blocks B, C, K, and L will be retained and given a facelift. Meanwhile, blocks A, D, E, F, G, H, and J will be entirely redeveloped. This extensive overhaul is projected to push the stadium’s final gross capacity to an impressive 85,750 seats. The redevelopment will be executed in multiple phases to ensure minimal disruption, starting with the demolition of blocks E, F, G, and half of H in Phase 1, followed by blocks D, J, and the rest of H in Phase 2.

The new design is deeply rooted in scientific planning. Climatic studies, including sun path and wind rose analysis, were conducted to understand shadows on the pitch, specifically noting existing shadows cast by the K and L stands at 4:00 P.M. The architects also performed extensive C-Value heat map studies to guarantee splendid, unobstructed views to the infield, creating a compact bowl design that brings fans closer to the action than ever before.

Delivering a world-class fan experience that can be benchmarked globally is a central mandate. The new design introduces a highly optimised seating configuration with six different seat categories designed to maximise economic potential. The upgraded venue will feature 15 dedicated Corporate Boxes accommodating up to 360 seats, complete with dining and a VIP Lounge.

General admission viewing will be vastly improved alongside a 1,530-seat Sky Deck and a 4,500-seat Premium General Admission section. Under-bowl amenities are being vastly expanded, offering 12 per cent more Food and Beverage facilities than the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). For non-match days, the site will integrate over 5,264 square meters of new spaces, including a 318-square-meter Sports Museum, a Members’ Club, retail merchandise shops, and a 260-square-meter digital experience center.

The proposed facade emphasises modularity, verticality to highlight the city skyline, and the inclusion of green terraces to literalise the “Garden” in Eden Gardens. Furthermore, a continuous compression ring roof structure is being strongly considered to give the stadium a clean, homogeneous, and iconic aesthetic. With preliminary civil and structural costs estimated at approximately Rs 400 Crores, this state-of-the-art upgrade promises to deliver a fully compliant, environmentally sustainable, and globally renowned sporting venue. The broader timeline for the project indicates that while work is currently progressing through various design and planning stages, the entire project is projected to continue until 2028.
