India was thumped very badly by Australia in the second Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma faced a loss by 10 wickets by the Australian team led by Pat Cummins. This was the fourth Test match in a row lost by Rohit, putting him on an unfortunate list together with Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra slammed Rohit Sharma for being defensive in his captaincy in Australia and added that Rohit’s defensive captaincy allowed the game to drift away from the Indian team. Speaking on his YouTube channel Chopra said that Rohit’s captaincy has been consistently poor over the past four Test matches
Chopra specifically mentioned India’s Day 2 performa
“Nah. Jasprit Bumrah had bowled a four-over spell and had already picked up a wicket in that. So why did he bowl only four overs, and didn’t bowl after that at all? He didn’t bowl in the entire session. So you are 100 percent right when you say that you missed a trick in captaincy. Rohit’s captaincy – let’s call a spade a spade. We saw defensive captaincy. He allowed the match to drift,” Chopra added.
India has had to sit back and manage their morale for a period, Australia having restored their confidence in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Courtesy of a belligerent century from Travis Head, and hostile spells from Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, Australia managed to defeat India with a 10-wicket thrashing to level the five-match series 1-1 on Day-3, Sunday, December 8.
As for the Australians, there was fire in the belly after suffering from a harsh 295-run beat down in the opening match of the series at Perth . All guns blazing and first off the mark in their efforts to defend their pink-ball bastion. And they did it definitive, blasting their way through India’s batting line-up through the early Sunday afternoon. India could just scrape through to a total of 175 runs from the overnight start by adding 47 runs to it; and into that new transformation, pink-ball party, jumped captain Pat Cummins with a five-for.
Unfazed by this, Australia achieved their requisite 19 runs in just 3.2 overs. The sensational performance of Travis Head with 140 runs on Day 2 of the pink ball Test earned him the player of the match award.
“He wasn’t captain in Perth. That means that win doesn’t count for him. If you discount the last century, it’s Dhoni, Kohli, and Rohit, and the biggest thing, which may not be with anyone else, is three straight losses at home. The captaincy has really not been very impressive,” Chopra added.
Now, India will be playing their third Test match in Brisbane against Australia at that iconic Gabba.
