With IPL 2026 set to begin on March 28, talk around MS Dhoni’s future has once again picked up pace. At 44, the Chennai Super Kings legend could be playing his final season, according to former India opener Aakash Chopra.
Chopra believes this edition may mark the end of Dhoni’s iconic IPL journey, especially if his role remains limited. He pointed out that Dhoni’s true value lies in his sharp game awareness on the field.
“You can’t manage a cricket team from the dugout like in football,” Chopra said. “Dhoni’s greatest strength is reading the game. I do think IPL 2026 could very well be his final season.”
Meanwhile, former India captain Sourav Ganguly chose to stay tight-lipped on the issue. He made it clear that any decision about Dhoni’s retirement will remain a private matter.
“I will tell Dhoni what to do and not to the media,” Ganguly said, avoiding speculation.
Chopra also raised concerns about Dhoni continuing as just an Impact Player. He feels that such a limited role does not suit a player of Dhoni’s stature or strengths.
“If that’s the role he’s playing, I believe it may be the right time for him to retire,” Chopra added, stressing that Dhoni’s influence is best felt when he is actively leading on the field.
Samson Seen as Future Keeper
Looking ahead, Chopra believes India already has a natural successor ready in Sanju Samson. He suggested Samson could take over wicketkeeping duties, possibly even during the season if Dhoni’s fitness becomes a concern.
Dhoni has been managing knee issues over the past few seasons, and his availability has often depended on his physical condition. This adds more weight to the retirement discussion.
For now, fans will be hoping to see one more vintage season from Dhoni in yellow. Whether it ends in another title or a farewell lap, IPL 2026 could be a landmark moment in his storied career.
