AEW Dynamite Preview: Kenny Omega Vs. Swerve Strickland, Women’s World Championship Match

AEW Dynamite comes to the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, Minnesota tonight with a loaded card headlined by a rematch between Kenny Omega and Swerve Strickland, with massive stakes attached to each man’s side of the wager.

Their first meeting on the February 18 edition of Dynamite saw Swerve emerge victorious, followed by a post-match attack on Omega that put him on the shelf. Omega returned at AEW Revolution on March 15 in dramatic fashion, stopping Swerve’s attempt to injure Brody King with a cinder block following their match and making clear that unfinished business remained between the two.

Round two now carries enormous consequences for both men. Swerve enters as the number one contender to the AEW World Championship, a position Omega covets for himself. In exchange for putting the contendership on the line, Swerve wants Omega’s EVP status and all the power and privileges that come with it.

Also on tonight’s card, Mina Shirakawa challenges Thekla for the AEW Women’s World Championship. Shirakawa is riding momentum from last week’s No Holds Barred victory over Marina Shafir, which she dedicated to the absent Toni Storm. Thekla has been publicly skeptical about the legitimacy of Storm’s absence.

AEW World Champion MJF returns to Dynamite for the first time since defeating Hangman Adam Page in a Texas Death Match at Revolution to retain the AEW World Championship. With Page now permanently barred from the title picture, new contenders are circling. Darby Allin has voiced intentions to challenge MJF, and tonight he is in action against LFI’s RUSH following last week’s coffin match victory over Gabe Kidd.

Rounding out the card, The Conglomeration, Orange Cassidy and Roderick Strong, face The Dogs, David Finlay and Clark Connors, in a tag team match. The Dogs fell short against Cassidy, Strong, and Allin in a tornado trios match at Revolution and will be looking for a different result tonight.

AEW Dynamite airs tonight at 8 p.m. EST on TBS and can also be streamed on Max, Fubo TV, DirecTV, Sling TV, Hulu Plus Live TV, and YouTube TV.
