We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle United won 7-6 on penalties against Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round, the match having ended 2-2 after normal time, then 3-3 after extra time.
Ramsdale 9
Some massive saves from Ramsdale today and not just in the shootout.
Obviously his penalty shootout heroics will take all the headlines but it was one of Ramsdale’s better performances of the season.
Trippier 7
A first start back from injury for Trips.
He had a decent enough game but got caught for pace during the build-up to Bournemouth’s second goal.
Thiaw 7
Much better from the German after his uncharacteristic performance in midweek.
Took a heavy fall late on but managed to shrug that off which is important with our current defensive injuries.
Botman 7
Another return to the starting line up following injury.
In an ideal world I don’t think he’d have been on the pitch after 60-70 minutes but Eddie Howe’s hand was forced by circumstance.
Livramento 7
Tino was wasteful with his final ball on a few occasions but covered across well while he was on the pitch.
Unfortunately, he looks to have suffered a hamstring injury which could see him missing for a while.
Willock 6
Felt he started the game quite well, although his vision wasn’t always what it should have been. He missed a quick ball out to the right wing on more than one occasion.
He was rightly substituted in the second half as he was running out of steam.
Ramsey 8
Today was probably Jacob Ramsey’s strongest performance in the black and white.
It’s not a particularly big sample size but he was always looking to make positive runs with and without the ball.
He made way for Bruno as we were chasing the game but if he can build on today, he’ll start to justify the transfer fee.
Tonali 8
Tonali has one of the best engines I’ve ever seen on a player.
It was his persistent running that earned our late penalty and he was always willing to press or track back.
He still wasn’t 100% (he does have a newborn at home, so he can be forgiven) but we don’t win that game today without Sandro.
Barnes 9 (MotM)
He’s our most in form player right now and he delivered another clinical performance in front of goal.
I’m hoping he can keep this run going as long as possible, as it’s a crucial stage of the season.
Woltemade 8
Big Nick was playing in a slightly deeper role today, more similar to the one he played last season in Germany.
He looked like he enjoyed himself too, his through ball for Barnes’ opener was a sumptuous pass.
He worked very hard out of possession but could have improved his performance by working to offer a bit more movement off the ball while the team are in possession.
Wissa 6
Missed an absolute sitter in the opening minutes.
He worked hard with his movement today but aside from his big early chance, he didn’t make a massive impact on the game.
SUBS
Hall 7
Played well after coming on for Tino with some excellent passing and dynamic dribbling into space.
We’re going to need to look after him moving forward as we’re now desperately stretched at the back.
Miley 8
I’m going to say it… I think our young number 67 should be on the plane to the USA in the summer.
He’s continuing to perform at exceptionally high levels, regardless of what role is asked from him.
Joelinton 8
His presence was felt almost immediately after stepping onto the pitch.
If he can stay playing at the levels he is at the moment, I’ve no doubt he’ll be another player heading to the world cup later this year.
Gordon 7
He made an immediate impact after coming on, stretching the Bournemouth back line.
Expertly dispatched his equalising penalty in a high-pressure situation and delivered an excellent cross for Barnes’ second goal.
He did make an absolute meal of a gilt-edged chance as time expired but made up for it in the shootout.
Bruno 8
I think he’s got an argument to be the best midfielder in the league this season, alongside Declan Rice.
I was hoping we’d be able to get through today without having to play him, to give our captain a well-earned rest, but once we fell behind his introduction was necessary.
