Ajinkya Rahane to Join Leicestershire for One-Day Cup and County

Ajinkya Rahane, the experienced Indian batter, has signed with Leicestershire to play the second half of the county season. Rahane will participate in the One-Day Cup campaign and five County Championship matches.

Last summer, Rahane had initially agreed to join Leicestershire but was recalled to India’s Test team for the World Test Championship final and the subsequent tour of the West Indies, preventing him from playing for the county in 2023.

Leicestershire’s director of cricket, Claude Henderson, expressed his excitement about Rahane’s arrival, emphasizing his extensive experience and leadership qualities, which will be invaluable to the team. Rahane, with over 13,000 first-class runs at an average of 45.76 and 6,475 List A runs at 39.72, brings a wealth of talent and knowledge.

Rahane’s mid-July arrival will coincide with the departure of South Africa allrounder Wiaan Mulder for international duty. This addition aims to bolster Leicestershire’s defense of the One-Day Cup, which they won last September.

Rahane expressed his enthusiasm for joining Leicestershire, highlighting his rapport with the club’s management and his desire to contribute to the team’s success this season.

Rahane said: “I’m really excited to have another opportunity to come to Leicestershire. I’ve built a strong rapport with Claude and [head coach] Alfonso [Thomas], and I’m looking forward to playing for the club this summer.

“I followed the team’s results last year and was very impressed with what I saw. I’m hoping to enjoy my cricket and contribute to more success for the club this season.”
