Alcaraz extends lead on No. 1 ranking despite no points to defend for Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz now owns a 3,150-point lead atop the ATP rankings after capturing the Qatar ExxonMobil Open title this past weekend. Alcaraz dropped only one total set in Doha and trounced Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

“I came this year hungry for more,” said Alcaraz, who recently completed the career Grand Slam with his Australian Open triumph. “I think after every tournament, we just have to set new goals. I’m just really happy and proud of everything I have done with my team on and off the court. It’s been a really strong start to the year. It wasn’t easy…. I had to be strong mentally with my team. I’m just playing great tennis and I’m really happy about this week. This trophy means a lot to me.”

It also means that Alcaraz’s cushion over Jannik Sinner atop the rankings is now 300 points more than it was when the Doha event began. The 22-year-old Spaniard added 500 points to his haul while 100 came off the board from his quarterfinal finish in Doha 12 months prior. Sinner added 100 points and lost none, as he was suspended at this stage of the 2025 campaign.

The 24-year-old Italian was sidelined for three months last season in between the Australian Open and Rome Masters. As such, he can only increase his point total at upcoming scheduled appearances in Indian Wells and Miami. It will be the same story in the early stages of the clay-court swing if Sinner turns up in Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and perhaps even Barcelona.

From now until Rome, Alcaraz has 400 points to defend in Indian Wells (semifinals), 1,000 in Monte-Carlo (champion), and 330 in Barcelona (runner-up).
