Carlos Alcaraz earned Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award honors for the second time in his career on Tuesday.
Alcaraz also won the Sportsmanship Award in 2023. He is the eighth player to win it multiple times, joining Roger Federer (13), Edberg (five), Rafael Nadal (five), Pat Rafter (four), Todd Martin (two), Alex Corretja (two), and Paradorn Srichaphan (two).
One example of the Spaniard’s fair play this season came at the French Open during a fourth-round match against Ben Shelton. Serving at 0-0, 30-all in the second set, Alcaraz gave Shelton the point even though the umpire did not notice that the eventual champion had hit a winner after the racket had already left his hand.
“You know, I have to say, I thought, ‘OK, I could not say anything,’ but I would have felt guilty if I didn’t say anything about it,” Alcaraz explained during his post-match press conference. “It’s just about if I know that I did a wrong thing, wrong shots or an illegal shot, I have to say. I have to be honest with myself. I have to be honest with Ben, with everyone.
“I think that’s the sport, or [it] should be like this. Just to be fair with the opponent, with yourself. I said it because I knew that it was an illegal shot. It shouldn’t be allowed, so that’s why I said it.”
The 2025 ATP Awards are being announced throughout this week. Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori were named the Fans’ Favorite doubles team, while Andrey Rublev was the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award winner.
