Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Cardoso, Girma, and more

Johnny Cardoso’s first 90-minute in close to one month proved to be his best outing of 2026.

Cardoso helped Atletico Madrid earn a 4-2 La Liga win over Espanyol, keeping them in the hunt to finish in the top-four. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder was all over the field in Diego Simeone’s squad, winning the most duels (9), drawing the most fouls (2), and completing the most tackles (5).

He also completed 86% of his passes in the match and made three interceptions, shining in midfield.

The 24-year-old has found it tough to string together consistent minutes this season, but will hope Sunday’s performance proves to be a spark for the remainder of the campaign. With Atletico Madrid seeking to advance in the UEFA Champions League midweek, Cardoso could be called on to help them do so.

Atletico Madrid hosts Belgian side Club Brugge in second-leg action on Tuesday before visiting Real Oviedo in La Liga play on Feb. 28.

In England, Naomi Girma scored her first Chelsea goal in an FA Cup win over Manchester United. Chris Richards and Crystal Palace picked up a home win over Wolves. George Campbell made his return for West Bromwich Albion.

In Germany, Noahkai Banks and Augsburg defeated Wolfsburg in Bundesliga play. Kristoffer Lund went the distance in Koln’s draw with Hoffenheim. Malik Tillman started but Bayer Leverkusen lost to Union Berlin.

In France, Folarin Balogun scored in AS Monaco’s road win over Lens. Tim Weah and Marseille lost to Stade Brest. Korbin Shrader scored once in Lyon’s road victory over Marseille in Women’s action.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan suffered a home loss to Parma. Weston McKennie played 90 minutes in Juventus’ shocking loss to Como.

Elsewhere, Marlon Fossey registered one assist in Standard Liege’s win while Bryan Reynolds went the distance for Westerlo. Auston Trusty was sent off in Celtic’s 2-1 home loss to Hibernian.
