Amit Mishra explains why Shubhman Gill is not an ideal captain for Team India

In a recent turn of events, veteran Indian spinner Amit Mishra has expressed his reservations about the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the captain of the India team for the T20 series against Zimbabwe. Despite India’s commanding 4-1 victory in the five-match series, Mishra’s concerns about Gill’s leadership abilities have sparked a debate within the cricketing community.

Amit Mishra criticizes Shubman Gill’s leadership capabilities

During a conversation on the Shubhankar Mishra Podcast, Mishra did not hold back his criticism he said that he would not name him as a captain as Gill doesn’t know how to do captaincy as was seen in the IPL.

Mai Shubhman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyuki maine usse IPL mai dekha hai, he doesn’t know ki captaincy kaise karni hai. Uske paas captaincy ka idea nahi hai.” (I would not have made him the captain). You saw in the IPL this season Gill doesn’t know how to be captain of this side; he was clueless,” said Mishra.

Mishra suggests T20 captain alternatives

The veteran spinner also pointed out that other seasoned players could have been considered for captaincy. He named Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rishabh Pant as an alternatives for the captaincy.

There’s Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rishabh Pant, who can lead the T20 side as well,” Mishra confidently suggested.

Notably, both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson were part of the Zimbabwe tour, highlighting that there were viable alternatives within the squad.

Mishra elaborated on his point, suggesting that the decision to give Gill the captaincy was aimed at providing him with leadership experience, which did not translate well during the IPL season.

They wanted him to gain experience in leadership, but that wasn’t visible when he led the team in the IPL,” Mishra added.

After Hardik Pandya returned to his old franchise, Gill was named the new captain of the Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2024 season. However, Gill’s performance as a captain was underwhelming, with the team winning only 5 out of 14 matches and finishing in 8th position on the points table. This has led to questions about his suitability for the leadership role in international cricket.
