Yahoo Sports recently put together a list of the “top tier” NFL wide receivers, and Amon-Ra St. Brown found himself ranked No. 5 on the list.
St. Brown recently discussed the ranking list with FanSided, and had the following to say:
“There’s so many good ones,” St. Brown said. “Everyone likes to look at numbers, but there’s so many factors that go into having a good year. I feel like it’s the guys that do it consistently, each and every year.”
When asked who he thought were the best in the NFL right now, St. Brown made sure to step aside. He did not want his name in the mix, not because he does not believe in himself, but because he did not want it to look self serving. Two players immediately came to mind:
The Seahawks’ Jaxon Smith-Njigba and the Rams’ Puka Nacua.
“I’ll say those two guys who were at the top of their game this year, and then after that I could name like 10 other guys,” St. Brown said.
Passing of the Torch
For years, when you asked who the top wide receivers in the NFL were, two names likely came to mind: Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase. While the two certainly deserve their flowers, St. Brown offered a new take and gave the future of the NFL the respect they deserve in Smith-Njigba and Nacua.
Smith-Njigba and Nacua are no longer emerging talents waiting their turn. They have established themselves. The numbers back it up. Their teams lean on them, and their skill sets reflect the modern blueprint for the position.
The wide receiver hierarchy is not what it was two years ago. The old guard is still elite, but the next wave is not waiting its turn. If anything, Amon-Ra St. Brown’s answer made one thing clear: the conversation at the top just got a lot more crowded.
