Andre Russell: In what proves to be a shocking and surprising decision, there’s a huge chance that reigning-champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won’t retain the services of their premier all-rounder, Andre Russell and are likely to release him ahead of the 2025 IPL Mega-Auction.
As per the sources of RevSportz, Russell is not a guaranteed retention option for Kolkata as the franchise is keen on exploring other-options as well. According to the rumours, KKR is still debating the choice, but because the retention deadline-day is quickly approaching, Russell is probably going to be released.
The Windies Fast-Bowling All-rounder is already 36-years-old and probably the Kolkata based team don’t want to rely on someone who is on the wrong side of 30 and is not gonna get younger anymore. Rumours suggest that the three-time IPL winners are looking to retain the services of players who can serve them for the foreseeable future and as a result, Andre is not being considered for retention at present.
The elite all-rounder had an excellent IPL 2024 campaign, amassing 222 runs in 14 games at a monstrous strike-rate of 185. He was really good with the ball as well, managing to dismiss 19 batters at a decent economy rate of 10.06. His All-Round performances helped his team lift the IPL for the 3rd time.
If Russell is released, then which players will KKR retain?
If the Kolkata Knight Riders end up taking the harsh decision of releasing Andre Russell, then they will be looking to retain the services of their trophy-winning skipper Shreyas Iyer. Star players Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine, the most valuable player of IPL 2024 will surely be retained.
There’s a good chance of Varun Chakaravarthy getting retained as well alongside young fast bowling sensation Harshit Rana who had an excellent debut IPL 2024 campaign with the ball.
Mitchell Starc, who became the costliest purchase in the history of the Indian Premier League is also likely to get released ahead of the Mega-Auction.
