Former English cricket star Graham Thorpe passed away after being hit by a train close to his home, according to the start of an inquiry into his death. Thorpe was 55 years old when he died. His wife later shared that the ex-England batsman had taken his own life and had been dealing with depression for a while.
The British press mentioned that the police said, “Police were called to Esher railway station at 8:26 am on August 4th due to a report of someone on the tracks. Emergency responders also arrived, but unfortunately, a person was declared dead at the scene. The incident is not considered suspicious.”
Thorpe, a top-notch batter who played for England, participated in 100 Test matches and 82 One Day Internationals from 1993 to 2002. He scored a total of 9124 runs, which included 16 scores of 100 or more and 60 scores of 50 or more.
In an interview with The Times, Amanda shared that Thorpe had been sick for a while.
“Even though he had a wife and two daughters who loved him deeply, he didn’t get better. He was very sick recently and truly thought that we would be better without him. We are heartbroken that he believed this and decided to end his own life,” Amanda said.
“That’s the Graham I know and remember and loved. Graham was a free spirit. My favorite memory of him is in Barbados, which he loved, enjoying a rum punch and listening to his favorite reggae after a swim. He was handsome, so handsome. He was funny and he made us all laugh so much,” she added.
Thorpe’s family is thinking about starting a foundation in his name.
Thorpe’s daughter Kitty said he was “not the same person” after a certain point and that he “could not see a way out”.
“He cherished life and cared for us, but he couldn’t find a solution. It was devastating to watch him become so distant,” she mentioned.
“It felt odd to see someone different inside Dad’s body. That’s why we’re so pleased that most memories focus on his life before this sickness changed him. I’m happy that’s how everyone remembers him—accurately, as the full person he was,” Kitty continued.
