Indian spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin received a warning for leaving his crease too early at the non-striker’s end during the 28th match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 on Sunday, July 28 at NPR College Ground in Dindigul. This incident occurred during the first innings when left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath was bowling the 15th over.
In one of the deliveries, Mohan Prasath paused just before releasing the ball because he noticed Ashwin leaving his crease. Upon seeing the bowler stop, Ashwin quickly halted his movement. Replays showed that Ashwin had his bat on the crease, and he would have been ruled out if the bowler had removed the bails.
Ashwin is famous for running out the non-striker in cricket, especially when he did it to Jos Buttler during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2019. The experienced off spinner has spoken openly about the negative views some people have of this type of dismissal and believes that bowlers often feel they need to maintain the Spirit of the game.
Earlier, Ashwin had also removed Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne for backing up too far during an ODI in 2012. However, Virender Sehwag, who was captaining India in that game, withdrew the appeal.
The MCC removed the stigma around this type of dismissal in 2022 by moving it from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out). Since then, batters have been careful not to leave the crease early when the bowler is in his stride.
Meanwhile, coming back to the TNPL game between Dindigul Dragons and Nellai Royal Kings, Ashwin was dismissed after scoring 15 (13). Dragons were all out for 136 batting first, with Shivam Singh scoring the highest with 70 (59). In reply, Nellai chased down the target in 17.5 overs and won the match by four wickets. Ashwin took 2/23 in four overs.
