Team India’s veteran off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, added yet another achievement to his illustrious career by surpassing Anil Kumble on the list of bowlers with the most Test wickets in Asia. The 38-year-old accomplished this milestone on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park in Kanpur on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Ashwin’s Historic Feat
Ashwin, who has been a key figure for India in red-ball cricket, secured his 420th wicket in Asia during the rain-hit first day.
He dismissed Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for 31 runs, trapping him lbw with a well-directed in-drifter.Â
With this dismissal, Ashwin surpassed Anil Kumble’s previous record of 419 wickets in Test matches played in Asia.Â
The legendary Sri Lankan spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan, tops the list with 612 wickets, followed by Rangana Herath (354) and Harbhajan Singh (300).
Only 35 overs were possible on Day 1 due to rain, but Ashwin’s wicket highlighted his continued dominance in the Test arena, particularly in Asian conditions where his skillset thrives.

Additional Records on the Horizon
Ashwin has consistently been breaking records in almost every Test match he plays.Â
In the current Test series against Bangladesh, he is on the verge of surpassing two more significant milestones.
Firstly, he needs just two more wickets to become the leading wicket-taker in India vs Bangladesh Tests.Â
Currently, Zaheer Khan holds the record with 31 wickets, while Ashwin stands at 30 in eight matches.Â
Secondly, Ashwin requires only three more scalps to top the charts for the most wickets in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with Josh Hazlewood currently ahead by two wickets.
As Ashwin continues to etch his name in cricketing history, his ability to dominate across various records remains a testament to his talent and longevity.
