Austin Theory returned to WWE in November at Survivor Series: WarGames in San Diego, ending a lengthy, unexplained absence. He debuted under a mask, but fans immediately recognized him. When the unmasking finally happened on the December 15 edition of Raw, it landed a bit flat — WWE had waited a week or two too long to make it official.
After that, Theory enjoyed about two weeks of momentum before fading into the crowded Vision faction.
Recently, on a special episode of Busted Open at WWE HQ, Paul Heyman offered brutally honest commentary on Theory — remarks that may have flown under the radar amid the media frenzy around Elimination Chamber and WWE 2K26. Here’s what Heyman said, and how Theory responded.

He confirmed that Theory’s place in The Vision is because of him, but emphasized that keeping himself there is Theory’s responsibility.
Theory seemingly responded to Heyman with the following video on Instagram.
Why Theory Isn’t Clicking Right Now
Theory shone brightest under Vince McMahon, whose belief in him translated into confidence on-screen. With Triple H, that confidence is less clear, leaving Theory appearing like he’s constantly trying to prove himself. Heyman described this as Theory lacking “skin” — that natural, effortless presence that makes a performer believable.
Second, Theory’s current character is too serious. Fans responded best to his eccentric, playful persona, which balanced silliness with success. The buzz-cut, stern version hasn’t resonated.
The Path Forward
There are two ways for Theory to regain traction:
- WWE could elevate him as the clear frontman of The Vision. Injuries to Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed make this possible. Logan Paul could act as his hype man, as the above Raw snapshot suggests.
- Alternatively, they could finally turn Theory babyface, embracing the inspirational, clean-cut persona he promotes online — encouraging fans to persevere, make healthy choices, and be their best selves.
Theory’s success will come when he’s allowed to be his true self — turned up to 110%.
If it were up to me, Theory should get the WrestleMania match against Seth Rollins.
