Virat Kohli’s recent form has led to him receiving a lot of criticism from fans and experts alike. Many have even called for the star batter to retire from red-ball cricket. However, legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting believes that Kohli shouldn’t be judged by his current form.
It wasn’t like Ponting only sang praises for the Indian batter as he pointed out that it is quite concerning that Kohli doesn’t have many 3-digit scores despite batting in the top order in Tests.
“I saw a stat the other day about Virat; it said he’s only scored two (three) Test hundreds in the last five years. That didn’t seem right to me, but if that is right, then that is, I mean, that’s a concern. There wouldn’t be anyone else probably even playing international cricket as a top-order batsman that’s only scored two Test match hundreds in five years,” Ponting told ICC.
So far this year, Kohli has only averaged 22.72 in 6 Tests and this has seen his ICC ranking in the format decline heavily as well. The slump in form saw him crash out of the top 20 list for the first time in 10 years.
However, Ponting pointed out the fact that Kohli has a great record against Australia Down Under, so he can very well turn it all around in the upcoming series.
“He loves playing against Australia. In fact, I know he loves playing against Australia. And his record (in Australia) is very good. If there’s a time for him to turn it around, it’d be this series. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Virat make runs in the first game,” Ponting said.
