Australia have named fast bowler Scott Boland in their squad for the Perth Test against India later this month.

The 13-member squad also includes Nathan McSweeney, who is expected to open the batting with Usman Khawaja.

McSweeney did not have a great outing against India A in the second unofficial on a difficult wicket but his recent performances in the Sheffield Shield and first-class record helped him pip Marcus Harris and Sam Konstas. He had also played an important part in the first unofficial Test.

“Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket,” George Bailey, the Chairman of Selectors, said.

“His performances for South Australia and Australia A weighed in his favour and supports our view he is ready for the opportunity at Test level.”

Also in the squad is Josh Inglis, who is now a constant in the limited-overs sides. Inglis will fight for the wicketkeeper’s slot with Alex Carey.

“Josh has been in great touch in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test squad,” Bailey said.

Scott Boland returns

Boland makes a return to the squad after going out of favour when his incredible start to Test cricket starting going off the radar.

Boland will be the pace back-up to the trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

“Scott has been a top-level performer when given the opportunity at Test level and remains a valued member of the squad,” the selector said.

“The squad is balanced and provides Andrew and Pat the options required for what shapes as a captivating series.”

Nathan Lyon is the lone spinner in the squad.

Outside of McSweeney and a call-up for Inglis, who will lead the Australian side in the T20Is against Pakistan and the third ODI, there are few surprises in the squad.

The middle-order is packed with solid options in Steve Smith, Marcus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head. Carey will likely take the gloves with Inglis as back-up.
