Matthew Hayden has advised Indian team on how to face the new ball, especially considering the top-order batters are down already.
Australian cricketing legend Matthew Hayden has given an advice to the Indian team on how to face the new ball, especially considering that the top-order batters have collapsed during the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Gabba.
The team has lost four wickets within first 15 overs of their innings against Australia. Yashasvi Jaiswal (4), Shubman Gill (1), Virat Kohli (3), and Rishabh Pant (9) were all dismissed on single-digit scores. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are currently the two batters who have the responsibility to score big numbers for the team.
Matthew has stated that India have lost their top-order batters mostly in the first 10 overs of their inning. He further explained that Australia’s young batter Nathan McSweeney is yet to perform in an ongoing series, though he was seen attempting to not lose his wicket early on.
“I just feel at the moment that there’s an urgency around India’s batting. It has to be an effort over time here at The Gabba. Technically, you know, find a way to get through the new ball. You haven’t got that long. You know, those wickets all came largely within the first 10 overs. So for mine, just having, you know, this brewing effort around trying to find a way to stay and remain at the crease. Nathan McSweeney hasn’t set this series on light. But what he has done is resist the urge to get out early. Usman Khawaja is a bit the same. And that’s Australian conditions. It’s a new ball wicket. Melbourne will be no different, nor Sydney,” Matthew said on star sports.
Coming to the match, rain caused an end to the third session of Day 3 at Gabba, and India is currently trailing Australia by 394 runs. At stumps, the visitors were struggling at 51/4 with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma on the crease.
