Avalanche Put Surprising Name in Play Ahead of the Trade Deadline

As per reputable Avs insider Adrian Dater, “I’m hearing that Val Nichushkin might suddenly be in play as #Avs trade piece.” Valeri Nichushkin has been a top offensive star for the Avalanche in the past, but he’s also got a history with off-ice issues. If he is suddenly in play as a trade piece, it will be intriguing to see how much interest there is and what the Colorado Avalanche might be looking for in return.

This rumor comes amid the team’s ongoing push for the playoffs, with the trade deadline approaching and many expecting the Avs to be active. Nichushkin (turning 31 soon) is in year four of his eight-year, $49 million extension ($6.125M AAV), with a modified no-trade clause (M-NTC) that gives him some say in any move.

In 51 games this season, Nichushkin has 12 goals and 36 points. This is also a multi-time 20-plus goals scorer. When he’s on, he offers strong two-way play. That said, teams will be unable to look past his previous off-ice issues (including stints with the Player Assistance Program).

Valeri Nichushkin Avalanche return

The Avs have historically been reluctant to move him during those periods, likely because they know just how productive he can be. He’s been a strong playoff performer, and giving that up is a risk. Maybe the Avs have hit a point where they want to make a move, even if a lateral one, to get a reliable piece for their 2025-26 run.

No confirmed destinations or packages yet, but this could heat up fast if the Avs are looking to shake things up for a playoff push or address other needs.
