In the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup, the future of Babar Azam as the national team captain remains uncertain. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced on Thursday that no decision has been made regarding Azam’s captaincy and that the board will consult with head coach Gary Kirsten and former players before taking any action.
Naqvi stated, “I have asked them (Kirsten and Mahmood) to come here as I want to talk to them in person and in detail based on Kirsten’s report on the World Cup.”
Pakistan’s early exit in the T20 World Cup, marked by significant defeats to India and the United States, has led to calls for major changes within the team. Naqvi, however, emphasized the need for a measured approach, noting, “No decision taken so far related to Babar Azam. One former player has submitted a very comprehensive report on what needs to be done to improve cricket. But I will take no decisions out of anger or based on what is being said on social media.”
Naqvi also highlighted the importance of thoughtful deliberation, “Decisions taken out of haste and anger generally lead to more complications and I don’t want that in our cricket.”
He added that Kirsten’s detailed report would be crucial in shaping the future strategy of the team. “Kirsten has given a very detailed report on the team and it will help us a lot to chalk out our future course of action.”
The PCB chairman stressed the need for improvements both within the team and the board. “I have been in the board for four months and I am looking at everything and believe me there is a lot to be done to improve things within the PCB besides the team. But I don’t want to jump to conclusions and make hasty decisions.”
Naqvi confirmed ongoing consultations with former players who have shown a sincere interest in the betterment of Pakistan cricket. “I have been in touch with some former players and am seeking suggestions from them but made it clear that I was only in touch with those players who sincerely want betterment of Pakistan cricket.”
This measured approach comes after Naqvi’s earlier criticism of the team and his suggestion of an overhaul, referring to the need for a “major surgery” following the team’s World Cup performance. The PCB chairman’s remarks indicate a cautious and comprehensive strategy moving forward to ensure the future success of Pakistan cricket.
