WWE legend John Cena is in the final week of his retirement tour, which consists of 36 dates. In a recent conversation with Bill Simmons of The Ringer, Cena revealed that his original plan was to do 220 dates. However, he later acknowledged that this was based on his misunderstanding, as the company no longer operates in that way.
Sean Ross Sapp addressed a fan question on the latest edition of Fightful Select Answers regarding whether WWE restricted Cena from doing over 200 dates due to financial reasons. Sapp reiterated Cena’s admission of ignorance about the current workings of modern WWE. He also noted that WWE does not even have 220 dates available in their schedule.
Cena began his Farewell Tour during the premiere of RAW on Netflix in January 2025. In a surprising turn, he turned heel at Elimination Chamber 2025 by attacking Cody Rhodes and joining forces with The Rock. Cena went on to dethrone Rhodes as the Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania 41, marking his record-breaking 17th World Championship win. Over the next few months, he successfully defended the title against former rivals Randy Orton and CM Punk before suddenly turning babyface ahead of his Street Fight against Rhodes at SummerSlam.
After losing the title to Rhodes, Cena faced Logan Paul, Brock Lesnar, and AJ Styles at Clash in Paris, Wrestlepalooza, and Crown Jewel, respectively. He also competed against Sami Zayn for the United States Title in an Open Challenge on SmackDown. Last month, in his final appearance in Boston on RAW, Cena captured the only title that had eluded him throughout his decorated career, the Intercontinental Championship. He later lost this championship to Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series: WarGames and is now set to face GUNTHER in his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
