Amid the escalating political crisis, Bangladesh’s interim government is making moves to secure the hosting rights for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, set to begin on October 3. With several nations, including England, Scotland, Australia, India, and New Zealand, advising their citizens against traveling to Bangladesh due to safety concerns, the event’s future hangs in the balance.
The youth and sports adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, Asif Mahmud, has disclosed plans to involve the United Nations in resolving these concerns. “There are travel restrictions for some countries, and so we will speak with the United Nations. There are some issues regarding security and infrastructure, and we will talk in this regard with Professor Yunus [chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government]. He is a sports lover, and I hope he can help resolve the matter,” Mahmud stated, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
The travel advisories issued by these countries pose a significant challenge to Bangladesh’s ability to host the World Cup. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing leadership crisis within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Following the fall of the Awami League government earlier this month, BCB President Nazmul Hassan has been conspicuously absent, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the tournament.
“The BCB president is missing. For a federation to function, all of its organs need to work. The president holds an important responsibility, and he is absent. The BCB is an autonomous federation, and we cannot make decisions for them,” Mahmud explained. He also mentioned that BCB directors have been advised to find a resolution within the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) legal framework. This includes possibly appointing an interim leader if necessary, though Mahmud emphasized the need for systemic changes to prevent corruption and ensure the organization’s stability.
The ICC is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and has kept all options on the table, including potentially relocating the tournament to another country if the situation does not stabilize. This uncertainty has cast a shadow over what should be a celebratory global event, highlighting the complex interplay between sports and geopolitics.
