Nishesh Basavareddy and his team confirmed on Thursday the recent speculation that he has hired Gilles Cervara as his new coach, as reported by the ATP website.
Cervara coached Daniil Medvedev for eight seasons, during which the Russian became No. 1 in the world and won the 2021 U.S. Open. He also finished runner-up at Grand Slams five times. Their partnership came to an end at the 2025 U.S. Open, where Medvedev’s slump reached a breaking point with a wild five-set loss to Benjamin Bonzi in the first round.
The current world No. 13 won just a single Grand Slam match this entire year.
Basavareddy, 20, is ranked 167th after briefly peaking inside the top 100 at No. 99 this summer. The American, who played college tennis at Stanford, won seven tour-level matches in 2025. That included a semifinal run in Auckland, after which he took a set off Novak Djokovic in round one of the Australian Open. Basaveddy’s next event is the NextGen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia later this month.
Medvedev is now being coached by Thomas Johansson. The 29-year-old ended this past season on a relative high note, finally capturing an ATP title in Almaty to go along with semifinal performances in Beijing and Shanghai plus a quarterfinal result in Paris.
