The BCCI will conduct elections for the posts of secretary and treasurer on January 12. The positions were vacated by Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar following their new appointments. The SGM will be held in Mumbai, with former CEC Achal Kumar Jyoti overseeing the electoral process.
BCCI to Elect New Secretary, Treasurer on January 12 in Mumbai
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced elections for the posts of secretary and treasurer on January 12. A Special General Meeting (SGM) will be conducted in Mumbai to fill these key positions. The posts became vacant earlier this month after Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar stepped down.
The BCCI constitution mandates that any vacant position must be filled within 45 days. The upcoming SGM fulfills this requirement as it will take place within 43 days. State units have already been notified about the meeting, following the Apex Council’s recent decision.
Why the Elections Are Conducting
Jay Shah, who served as the BCCI secretary, was appointed the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1. Ashish Shelar has resigned after sworn in as a Maharashtra government cabinet minister.
The Lodha Committee reforms, upheld by the Supreme Court, state that one individual cannot hold two positions simultaneously. This rule applies to public servants, ministers, and officials in sports administration. As a result, both Shah and Shelar had to vacate their respective roles in the BCCI.
Electoral Process and Interim Arrangements
To ensure a transparent electoral process, former Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti has been appointed as the Electoral Officer. Jyoti, a retired Gujarat cadre IAS officer, has prior experience managing critical elections in India.
Currently, Assam’s Devajit Saikia is serving as the interim secretary, while the treasurer position remains vacant. The elections on January 12 are expected to be unanimous, with consensus likely among the BCCI state associations.
