Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami made quite an impact a couple of weeks ago with seven wickets on return against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy match, playing after almost a year due to injuries. But it seems that he will not head to Australia anytime soon. The Times of India reported on its Wednesday (November 27) edition that contrary to speculation regarding Shami’s addition to the Indian team for the remaining four Test matches of the Test series between India and Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no plans of sending Shami to Australia soon.
At the moment, Shami is participating in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in Bengal. So far, in the two games, he has taken four wickets. His first outing was the opener against Punjab, where he recorded 1/46 in four overs. He followed it up by taking three Hyderabadi batters for 21 in 3.3 overs during the second match, played in Rajkot on November 25.
“At this point, there hasn’t been any conversation about sending Shami to Australia, as the board has been satisfied by the performance of the fast bowlers chosen for the series.”
A source from the BCCI quoted, “There has been no conversation around trying to send Shami to Australia, at least for now. At the moment, the fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the first XI in the opening Test at Perth are doing their job very well.”
In the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India won by 295 runs in Perth on Monday, November 25, Indian fast bowlers, led by stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, took as many as 18 wickets in the match. Bumrah took 8 wickets (5+3), whereas Mohammed Siraj finished the match with a total of five wickets (2+3) to his name.
On his first outing for India internationally, the 22-year-old bowler Harshit Rana took three scalps in the first inning and one more in the second, while Andhra all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy joined him with one in the second inning.
Besides them, India has Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI.
