The election of two Indian delegates to the ICC meetings will be the main focus of the BCCI’s 93rd Annual General Meeting, which takes place here on Sunday. The appointment of a replacement for current secretary Jay Shah is not on the agenda.
The reason the gathering is significant is that the International Cricket Council has planned a conclave to take place in Dubai following the Women’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
The grand finale of the event is scheduled for October 20 in Dubai. Shah will still be sitting in as BCCI secretary on that day, though, since he will become ICC chairman on December 1. Shah is anticipated to attend that meeting in his capacity as the BCCI representative.
Shah often represented India in ICC parleys following Sourav Ganguly’s term as BCCI president; the most recent such event took place in Colombo earlier this July.
Although he rarely does so, the alternate director who can represent BCCI at meetings of the international body is the current board president, Roger Binny.
It is unclear if Binny will continue in his capacity as Alternate Director with one year remaining on his contract, or if someone else is proposed for the position at the AGM.
Although the secretary’s choice is not stated, the members—who have also convened here for the Saturday inauguration of the new National Cricket Academy complex close to the international airport—will undoubtedly debate among themselves who may be a good fit to succeed Shah.
Currently, Anil Patel, the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, and Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association and the late Arun Jaitley’s son, are the two names that are being floated for the position. On the other hand, joint secretary Devajit Lon Saikia and BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar can perhaps be promoted.
However, Patel is currently the front-runner for the position, which will be formally confirmed at the Special General Meeting (SGM), the date of which is also anticipated to be disclosed following the AGM, according to information obtained.
In addition, the AGM will approve the appointment of an Indian Cricketer’s Association (ICA) delegate to the IPL Governing Council.
The current administrator, V Chamundeswaranath, a senior and former Andhra player, will stay in that role, a source close to the situation confirmed to PTI.
The current IPL chairman, Arun Singh Dhumal, and Avishek Dalmiya are the two members of the General Body who will also be nominated to the IPL GC. They could return to the role for a minimum of one more season.
In the meantime, Yajurvindra Singh, a former Test cricketer and stalwart for Saurashtra and Maharashtra, will assume the role of ICA president, which became vacant following the passing of former India opener Anshuman Gaekwad.
The AGM will also consider other matters, including two from the General Body and the establishment of subcommittees such as the Cricket Committee, in addition to approving the yearly budget for the 2024–25 season.
The AGM will also ponder over the report submitted by the board’s internal committee formed under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy.
