India’s 30-run defeat to South Africa in Kolkata has created fresh tension between head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI. India were bundled out for 93 while chasing a modest target on a black-soil turning pitch at Eden Gardens, raising more questions about their home Test form.
The board was unhappy with Gambhir’s public defence of the surface. He said the pitch behaved exactly the way the team had asked for and added that it rewarded focus and solid technique.
He explained, “Yes, it may not be a pitch that allows for flamboyant big shots, but if you focus and play solid cricket, you can score runs. There were no major issues with the wicket. It wasn’t unplayable. It tested technique, mental toughness, and temperament. This is exactly what we asked for and received.”
The comments did not go down well within the BCCI. Officials felt the team’s batting flaws were being masked by talk about challenging pitches. India have now lost three home Test series in a row, something unheard of in the last decade.
Internal Review Coming
The board is reviewing India’s red-ball struggles, but a split coaching model is not being considered right now. Gambhir is expected to continue because there are no strong alternatives available, and the focus is on stability before major tournaments.
A detailed review will take place after the upcoming white-ball season. The 2026 T20 World Cup at home is likely to be the biggest checkpoint for Gambhir’s long-term future as head coach. Officials want clearer direction and better results, especially in Test cricket, before making any big decisions.
For now, the board wants fewer public statements on pitches and more clarity on how the team plans to fix its technique against spin and fast bowling on tricky surfaces. The loss in Kolkata has intensified that conversation, both inside the dressing room and at the BCCI headquarters.
