On July 11th, Ben Stokes reached a special milestone by scoring 6000 runs and taking 200 wickets in Test cricket. He is now one of only three players, along with Sir Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis, to accomplish this rare achievement. Stokes, who is the captain of the England team, reached this landmark on the second day of the first Test match against West Indies at the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground. England has been performing very well in the first two days of the match, with West Indies finishing Day 2 with 79 runs for 6 wickets, trailing by 171 runs.
Ben Stokes made history by being the first English player and the third player overall to score more than 6,000 runs and take 200 wickets in Test cricket. Gary Sobers, from the past, played in 93 Test matches and scored 8,032 runs while taking 235 wickets. Jacques Kallis, a top all-rounder from South Africa, played in 166 Test matches, scored 13,289 runs, and took 292 wickets. Ben Stokes reached this milestone in his 103rd Test match, with 6,320 runs and 200 wickets.
In his very first over, Stokes successfully took a wicket, dismissing Kirk McKenzie for zero runs. This achievement marked a significant milestone for him. Additionally, Stokes reached another prestigious group by scoring 10,000 runs and taking 300 wickets in international cricket. This group includes players like Carl Hooper, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi, and Shakib Al Hasan. Stokes also took the wicket of Mikyle Louis in the West Indies’ second innings. He reached 201 wickets when Louis edged the ball behind to Jamie Smith, and Stokes completed 10 overs in that spell.
In the West Indies’ initial batting round, Stokes also bowled for eight overs and took one wicket.
Before the series started, the team captain said: “I can now say that I can perform the role I’ve been known for over the past decade, which is batting and acting as the fourth bowler.
“I’ve put in a lot of hard work to reach this point, and I understand how valuable my role as the fourth bowler is to the team. I’m really looking forward to starting this week.”
After England dismissed the West Indies for 121 runs in their first innings, they scored 371 runs themselves. The West Indies team, which was visiting, continued to have difficulties and were at 79 runs with 6 wickets down in their second innings, facing a significant lead they needed to overcome.
