It’s WrestleMania season in pro wrestling! So I thought it would be an appropriate time to share a story from WWE that all of you can learn from. Betting on yourself is easy to say, but it takes real courage and bravery to do. Often, it is necessary to take that leap if you want to grow in life and/or in a career. This is a story about a man who bet on himself and is reaping the benefits: a WWE superstar and pro wrestler who has grown into one of my favorites because of his story.
If you follow pro wrestling and WWE, you know that a few years ago, WrestleMania 40 featured Cody Rhodes going up against Roman Reigns in the main event. Roman was already a certified main-event superstar. Cody, on the other hand, hadn’t always been in that position. During his earlier run in WWE, he was viewed more as a mid-card talent and was never truly part of the main-event scene.
So where did he bet on himself?
In May 2016, Cody left WWE because he felt he wasn’t getting the support he deserved in the company. At the time, it was almost unheard of for superstars to request a release because there simply weren’t many big-time pro wrestling promotions outside of WWE. He then moved into the independent scene, where he began rebranding himself and building a much bigger name.
While in the independent scene, a wrestling journalist was asked if he believed an independent pro wrestling show could sell 10,000 tickets, and he said, “Not anytime soon.” Cody took that as a challenge, not only as a wrestler, but also as an organizer of the event. Along with others, he went on to sell more than 10,000 tickets in less than an hour, further making him a much bigger name and draw.
Betting on himself didn’t stop there. In 2019, he helped launch an entirely new company, AEW (All Elite Wrestling), where he became a central figure both in and out of the ring as an Executive Vice President. By 2022, Cody Rhodes was a far bigger name than when he left the WWE in 2016.
In another bold move, he left the company he helped build and returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, receiving one of the best pops ever seen at WrestleMania.
Fast forward to WrestleMania 40 last April, and it was the second year in a row that Cody was the main event at the biggest event of the year. This time, however, he became the WWE Champion.
This April, he is set to main-event WrestleMania again for the fourth year in a row as one of the faces of WWE.
The message I want you to get from this story is simple: sometimes, you have to bet on yourself if you want to make meaningful progress in your life. The unknown can be intimidating, but having the courage to believe in yourself (and the willingness to work your tail off) can turn that risk into the best decision you’ve ever made.
