Old Northamptonians Girls U16 10 Ampthill Girls u16 54
The girls travelled to Northampton for this East Midlands League fixture full of confidence yet with one eye on the weather (or was that just the parents).
The predicted heavy rain arrived just in time for warm up and continued throughout the first half – on the positive side the balmy rainy 12 degrees was an improvement on January’s sleety 0C.
Ampthill got off to a slightly hesitant start, under resourcing rucks and often running back into trouble – however they made some headway scoring 3 converted tries in the first half, which felt a bit tough on ON’s who were physical, competing hard and probably let a couple of good chances slip-by. The weather and conditions were atrocious – with the playing kits barely distinguishable by the end of the half.
Ampthill seemed to lose focus at half time, conceding early in the second half but again like the previous weeks they seemed to have another gear to go into. The powerful direct running coupled with some deft handling skills was too much for ONs, as Ampthill added a further 5 tries (3 converted) in the second half. ON’s did hit back with another try but all in all during the second half the girls were showing maturity in defence – smothering the ONs attack with a well-spaced defensive line, line speed and low tackles – and they were rewarded with plenty of turnover ball.
Special mention this week goes to Charlotte who went on a try scoring rampage scoring 4 of Ampthill’s tries – remarkably all in a row – Ampthill tries 3,4,5 and 6 (plus she kicked a couple of conversions too). She was handsomely rewarded as the opposition’s player of the match.
Ampthill will be happy with their first half of the season – qualifying for the last 16 of the National Cup and topping the East Midlands league.
Good luck to the huge Ampthill contingent playing representative rugby this weekend!
