The Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed confidence that the Black Princesses can make history at the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup by advancing past the group stage for the first time. The team has never progressed beyond the group in their previous eight appearances.
Senior Technical Advisor to the Minister, Betty Krosbi Mensah, highlighted the strides made by the squad following their 3â2 aggregate win over South Africa in the third round of qualifiers.
The victory sets up a final qualifying clash against Uganda for a place at the tournament in Poland later this year.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Mensah acknowledged challenges such as limited playing time for the players but praised the technical team’s efforts to build cohesion.
“The technical team is very much aware of some of these hitches and so they are doing everything possible. One, we realised that most often the girls do not have a lot of play time and that is how come from January, I think December last year they were kept at the camp that is in just so they will be able to experience each other more,” she said.
“I believe that the team as we have today is a better team than before if you ask me and I am convinced that it also has more to do with leadership issues.”
With the decisive qualifier against Uganda looming, expectations are high that the current Black Princesses side could secure a World Cup spot and set a new benchmark for Ghanaian women’s football.
