Blue Jays Nation’s 2026 Pre-Season Prospect Countdown – No. 23: Josh Kasevich

In what was supposed to be a breakout season, injuries derailed Josh Kasevich’s 2025 season.

This is Blue Jays Nation’s bi-annual prospect ranking, where we’ll look at the top 35 prospects in the system in the month of February. As always, I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players. If you missed the 24th-ranked prospect, you can read about Micah Bucknam here.

Getting to know Josh Kasevich…

Position: Shortstop

Bats: Right

Born: January 17th, 2001

Acquired: Second-round, 2022 draft

Spending his collegiate years with the Oregon Ducks, the Toronto Blue Jays selected Kasevich with the 60th overall pick in the 2022 draft. The light-hitting shortstop made his professional debut shortly after, slashing .262/.344/.336 with no home runs in 122 plate appearances with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays.

All of Kasevich’s 2023 season was spent with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he slashed .284/.363/.365 with four home runs in 383 plate appearances, with a 9.9 BB% and 10.7 K%. He had similar stats when he began his 2024 season with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, slashing .284/.333/.364 with three home runs in 393 plate appearances.

After a promotion to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Kasevich hit a home run in his first game in the final stop of the minor league ladder. He finished the 2024 season slashing .325/.382/.433 with three home runs in 173 plate appearances for the Bisons. As a whole, he had a 107 wRC+ and nearly hit .300.

Unfortunately, Kasevich’s 2025 season spiraled out of control quickly. He injured his back in Spring Training, then injured his wrist during a rehab assignment. When healthy, he slashed just .173/.272/.184 with no home runs in 114 plate appearances with the Bisons. Representing the Blue Jays at the Arizona Fall League, Kasevich played better, slashing /.255/.419/.255, but failed to hit an extra base hit.

Ranking as MLB Pipeline’s 12th-best Blue Jays’ prospect in their 2025 mid-season update, Kasevich is a good hitting shortstop with strong defence. He has one of the best hit tools in the Blue Jays system and will stick at shortstop. Playing some third base last season, there’s a chance for Kasevich to be a solid utility infielder in the future, but his ceiling depends on if he can start to hit for extra base power.

Hopefully, Kasevich can have a healthy Spring Training and start hitting like he did in 2024 when he rejoins the Bisons at the end March.
