Blue Jays Nation’s 2026 Pre-Season Prospect Countdown – No. 26: Cutter Coffey
The Toronto Blue Jays had a rough 2024, but that year’s trade deadline has positioned them well for the future. Cutter Coffey is the first prospect we’ll cover in the 2026 pre-season list who was acquired by the Blue Jays ahead of the 2024 trade deadline.
Getting to know Cutter Coffey…
Position: Infield
Bats: Right
Born: May 21st, 2004
Acquired: Trade with Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox selected Coffey in the second round of the 2022 draft out of Liberty High School in Bakersfield, California. A two-way play at the time of the draft, Coffey ended up hitting and slashed .125/.300/.156 with no home runs in 40 plate appearances to end the 2022 season.
His first full season in the big leagues was in 2023, beginning the year in Single-A. Over 81 games, the infielder slashed .226/.341/.348 with six home runs in 349 plate appearances for a 97 wRC+. At the end of the season, Coffey got a cup of coffee in High-A, but was rather unremarkable.
The 21-year-old didn’t have a great end to his 2024 season, slashing just .185/.309/.272 with one home run in 97 plate appearances. Like the year prior, Coffey spent his entire 2025 season in High-A, slashing .273/.359/.427 with 11 home runs in 440 plate appearances for a 119 wRC+. Moreover, Coffey had a 10.7 BB% and 22.7 K%, the latter being a career-best.
Defensively, he’ll probably play third base as he has an above-average arm (hence why he was a pitcher in high school). He also has the power to play the hot corner, but his pitch recognition will need to improve once hitting Double-A, which he could do as soon as next season.
