In the cricket world, records are created and broken every day. But some records are almost unbreakable. Brian Lara’s 400* is one of them. Even after 20 years, no one even got close to that unbelievable milestone. Legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara believes Indian youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have the potential to surpass his Test world record of 400 for the highest individual score.
Lara’s Incredible Record:
In the cricket world, a talent like Brian Lara is rare. He has proven this fact multiple times by his brilliance. In his career, he has touched so many milestones and created numerous records. But his glorious innings of 400* against England is the most precious one. He made history with an unforgettable innings of 400 not out against England on April 12, 2004, at Antigua Recreation Ground in St. John’s, Antigua. This marathon knock established Lara’s record as the highest individual scorer in Test cricket at that time. His feat surpassed Matthew Hayden’s previous record of 380 runs, achieved against Zimbabwe in October 2003.
Earlier in his career, Lara had also set a benchmark when he scored 375 runs against England in 1994, surpassing Gary Sobers’ record of 365 runs. Lara held the record for the highest individual score in Test matches until Matthew Hayden broke it with his innings of 380 runs against Zimbabwe, a feat that Lara himself had briefly eclipsed.
Lara Choose His Successor:
Since then, no batsman has surpassed Lara’s record, despite 11 instances of batters scoring triple centuries in international cricket. Lara acknowledged that some batters from his era posed a threat to his record, notably Virender Sehwag, who achieved two triple centuries.
The cricket great said, “There were players in my time who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark – Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players.”
Looking ahead, Lara identified England’s Zak Crawley and Harry Brook, along with Indian youngsters Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, as potential candidates to break his record in the future. He named them as likely contenders who could challenge his milestone of 400 runs in Test cricket.
Lara said, “How many aggressive players do you have playing today? Especially in the England team. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook. Maybe in the Indian team? Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill. If they find the right situation, the records could be broken – both of them.”
