Double team golds for GB and NI in India

Report by Adrian Stott

Scottish athlete Katrina Ballantyne claimed a superb silver medal at the IAU World 50km championships in Delhi – on a day when there were two Scottish Record performances.

The Leeds City athlete was the early leader from compatriot Naomi Robinson, but once things settled down, Robinson took the lead with the Scot settling comfortably into second place.

Robinson would go on to win comfortably in 3:13:29  with Ballantyne, the former Dundee Hawkhill and Glasgow Uniiversity athlete, maintaining her second place to the finish.

Her time of 3:17:24  broke Ellie Greenwood’s Scottish mark of 3:23:17 from 2013, which was a split time in the Two Oceans race in South Africa. It puts Katrina seventh on the GB all-time 50km rankings.

Backed up by Becky Briggs in seventh and Melissah Gibson in 17th, the GB and NI women comfortably secured the team gold medals ahead of Poland.

In the men’s race, Henry Hart (Belgrave Harriers) lowered his own Scottish 50k record when finishing fifth. His time of 2:48:32 improves his own Scottish 50km record of 2:50:33 set in 2024.

Kevin Campbell (Cambuslang Harriers), was also inside the old record, finishing sixth in his debut 50km in 2:48:52.

It was part of an unprecedented clean sweep of the top six places by the British athletes in the men’s race.

The experienced Alex Milne ( Hercules Wimbledon), ran a perfectly judged race to take the gold medal in 2:46:09, a new European and British 50km record (subject to ratification)
