Julian Florez is the Assistant Coach for the Brooks Beasts Track Club.
RunBlogRun #1: Julian, how would you set up a weeklong training program for high school cross-country runners?
Julian Florez: I recommend a long run (60-75 minutes), threshold work and a speed session.
RunBlogRun #2: How do you deal with race days?
Julian Florez: While you can train through some early race days, race days are hard days.
RunBlogRun #3: How do you suggest a threshold day?
Julian Florez: I would suggest 2-3 minute threshold intervals that get the athletes’ HR to 160-170. I would recommend 4-5 repeats for athletes who can do a 5k in 16 minutes.
RunBlogRun #4: How about recovery days?
Julian Florez: Do not worry about a watch, keep it real slow. Josh Kerr keeps it really slow on his recovery days, and you should too (Josh Kerr owns the WR Indoors for 2 miles and is World Champion at 1,500m, in 2023, ) and 3,000 meters indoors, in 2024. If he can keep it slow and easy, you can too!
