Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett can set the single-season sack record against Joe Burrow and the Bengals.
Cleveland Browns superstar pass-rusher Myles Garrett wants to get the sack record by any means necessary against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 18.
After being held without a sack against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, Garrett will be gunning for Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow on Sunday. He needs just one sack to set the NFL single-season record, which currently sits at 22.5. It is held jointly by T.J. Watt and Michael Strahan.
Garrett doesn’t care how the sack happens. He just wants to get the job done.
“They all count. So, I don’t care if I run his (expletive) out of bounds,” Garrett said. “However he gets got, he gets got.”
Burrow has been sacked by Garrett 12 times — the most by any quarterback in Garrett’s career. That total is tied with fellow AFC North rival Lamar Jackson. Garrett was well aware that Burrow was atop that list.
“Absolutely. I’ve seen his face on the ground looking up at me, saying, ‘hi Myles’ and ‘hi Joe,’ too many times,” Garrett said. “So yeah, I figured he’d be at the top.”
Joe Burrow is Not Worried About Myles Garrett’s Sack Chase
Both the Browns and Bengals have been eliminated from postseason play. But the focus remains on winning for both sides as they try to build some momentum for the coming season. Burrow doesn’t plan to do anything specific to avoid being the record-setting sack for Garrett.
“Yeah, I’m certainly not going to overcompensate either way,” Burrow said. “I’m not going to go out of my way to not let him get the record. And I’m not going to go out of my way to let him get the record either. I’m going to go and play football.
“There’s going to be situations that a sack is the best of the bad outcomes of that play, and maybe I take one. And there’s going to be other situations that I’m about to get sacked and I need to throw it away in that situation. Such a situational game that I don’t think you can go in thinking one way or the other. Every play is so different.”
Browns DE Myles Garrett Remains Confident
The Steelers had a clear game plan to neutralize Garrett and keep him from breaking the record against them. However, Garrett felt their focus on him came at a cost.
“To an extent, I feel like they were more worried about keeping me away from Aaron (Rodgers) than, you know, getting the win, and I think that’s what came back to bite them,” Garrett said.
Garrett now has one more shot to break the record. He is confident that he’ll get it done.
“My confidence hasn’t wavered. I’m fully confident that it’ll come, so I’m fine,” Garrett said.
Garrett has been dealing with a hip injury this week. He said it’s something he’s been battling through this season but does not expect it to affect him too much against the Bengals. Garrett registered two sacks when the teams faced off in Week 1.
