The Cleveland Browns could use some clarity at quarterback.
They have a new head coach and coaching staff with no allegiances to the current QB room, so, technically, everybody has to win them over.
Of course, Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson may be far ahead of Dillon Gabriel in the pecking order. That said, there’s always a possibility that they will add someone else to the mix.
Considering that, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot established that they might only do so if they can a) move Gabriel and b) find a young veteran with some untapped potential.
Browns could still add another quarterback to the mix
“If they do add a veteran, I think it’ll be a younger guy that will have some upside and can do something for them down the road. If they do something like that, I think they would be open to trading Dillon Gabriel,” Cabot said on 92.3 The Fan.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano, “it doesn’t seem likely” Malik Willis will sign with the Browns, so that doesn’t leave them with many options who fit that mold.
Kyler Murray is a veteran who hasn’t been put in a position to succeed, but he may not have much of a higher ceiling than what he’s shown thus far.
Mac Jones could be an option, but they’d have to give up a huge haul to get him.
Then, there’s Anthony Richardson, who has sky-high potential and has been in the league for three years now, but is by no means an upgrade in the present.
That doesn’t leave them many — if any — options that fit that mold, assuming they even find someone who’s willing to trade for Gabriel.
As things stand now, it looks like Sanders will battle things out with Watson, and he’s likely slightly ahead in the pecking order.
That said, the Browns already made a big and shocking move by trading for OL Tytus Howard, so GM Andrew Berry clearly means business and is eager to fix the team’s broken offense this offseason.
