Bruce Boudreau talks up George McPhee for the Leafs’ vacant GM job: Leafs Morning Take
Florida Panthers AGM Sunny Mehta has emerged as the betting favourite to take over the Maple Leafs’ vacant GM role.
Our friends over at bet365 had some fun with the odds—at +4000, a very familiar name popped up: Jay Rosehill. Can you believe it? That instantly became the first topic on Tuesday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take. Rosie thought we were joking… which, let’s be honest, we kind of were. Imagine Jay running the Maple Leafs!
While Mehta’s name has been circulating heavily, so has Mike Gillis, who’s been out of the public eye since his days running the Vancouver Canucks. For what it’s worth, the Leafs have officially hired a firm – The Coaches Agency – to conduct their search. This is the firm’s sixth search for an NHL club, but first for the Maple Leafs. It will be fascinating to see where all of this goes.
Meantime, we finally got to Nick Kypreos’ reporting from last week outlining what Brad Treliving may have been looking for as a potential return package for Matthew Knies. Spoiler: IT WAS A LOT. And rightfully so. Will the new management team circle back on a potential Knies trade? It would be a tough sell, that’s for sure, but never say never. Knies is future captain material.
After that, Longtime NHL bench boss Bruce Boudreau stopped by to weigh in on the growing chaos surrounding the Maple Leafs—and didn’t hold back. He touched on Keith Pelley’s recent comments and the overall direction of the organization, while offering a candid perspective on what it’s like operating under that kind of spotlight. Boudreau also had notable praise for George McPhee as a potential GM candidate, highlighting his track record, experience, and ability to build a winner.
David Pagnotta will be in for Jay Rosehill as co-host on the Wednesday edition. We’ll preview Leafs/Caps. Plus, NHL head coach Don Granato, who will be coaching the United States at the upcoming World Championships, will drop by the show.
