In the dreaded “between
the Beanpots trap game,” Terriers host #18 Maine at Agganis Arena. Puck drop is at 7
p.m. ET for the contest that will be live-streamed on ESPN+ and NESN+.
Coach Jay Pandolfo, in his weekly media call, asserted that the team is not looking past the game with the Black Bears who swept BU earlier in the season at Alfond Arena, winning 5-4 in overtime and 8-5.
“I think our
guys do have a pretty good understanding of how important tomorrow night’s game
is,” he said, “and we don’t want to look past that just because of where we’re at in the
standings in Hockey East.
“We’re trying to kick-start getting on some sort of run
here. We need to make sure we play well tomorrow night.”
Regarding the 38 shots on goal in the Beanpot game, he said, “I thought our forecheck was really good. We were winning a lot of pucks in the offensive zone. We still, as a team, are missing [the net on] too many shots.
“We actually did get some opportunities where we just shot the puck to the net and created some rebounds. We didn’t score on them but we had some grade A chances off it it. A little more purposeful shooting is going to help us.”
Discussing the emerging offensive side of freshman D Charlie Trethewey‘s game, Pandolfo pointed out that “a lot of it has to do with being more comfortable, having more confidence with the puck. He’s playing more than earlier in the season.”
Trethewey’s strong move carrying the puck deep led to BU’s first goal against Northeastern.
Pandolfo added, “One thing
that was really impressive on Monday: He didn’t give Eiserman a great pass, we
turned the puck over, and then he took a tripping penalty, and they end up
scoring. And for a young kid not to get discouraged, he played very well after
that.”

The beneficiary of Trethewey’s play was Jonathan Morello who had the centering pass go in off his shin pad for his sixth goal and 12th point.
“It’s been a pretty seamless transition [to NCAA hockey] for him,” Pandolfo explained. “Just the way he plays the game. He plays an honest game, a simple direct game. He can really skate. He’s good in the face off circle. He’s been one of our three or four most consistent forwards from day one. We have a lot of trust in him.”
Like BU, Maine had an up-and-down January, going 3-3-1 in seven games. Also like BU, they were swept by Providence, except in Maine’s case, it was three times.
Freshman Justin Poirier is the top goal-scorer in Hockey East with 18 and is second in points with 29. Senior defensman Brandon Holt has 22 points (5G,17A) while junior Josh Nadeau and freshman Miguel Marques each have 17 points.
A familiar face in goal is junior Albin Boija who brings a 2.56 GAA and a .900 save percentage.

edition of The Battle of Comm Ave.
-Legendary coaches Jack Parker and Jerry York will perform a ceremonial puck prior to the game.
-In addition to
local coverage by NESN and live streams from ESPN+ and TSN+, the championship game will be

►Last Friday,
Netflix debuted its “Miracle: The Boys of ’80” documentary, which more than lived up to
the hype. A new episode of the Spittin’ Chicklets podcast, fronted by Ryan Whitney, provides a
perfect companion piece with non-stop story-telling from Jack O’Callahan, the two-time Terrier captain, All-American, 1978 NCAA champion and 1980 Olympic
champion. OC talks candidly about games vs. Russia and Finland, the long season
of exhibitions before the Olympics, growing up in Charlestown, choosing BU over
Harvard and his days as a bartender at The Dugout. He also dispels a few Olympic
myths. O’Callahan’s interview begins around
the 1:20:00 mark of the podcast. Here’s a taste:
