Buholz, Nichols & Kimball Win Singles Gold in Palm Beach Gardens (Level 1 USTA & ITF MT 1000)

Draws are here, for USTA members only to view.

Yesterday, Thursday…was a very long one. It began with 8am warm up with Anna Zimmermann as it always did this week (thanks Anna!). Bunnie Jackson played Pat Purcell and finally prevailed 67 64 61 in three hours on a sunny warm day. I played Una Davis and the score, 60 62 to me, belied the closeness of the second set in particular…we had 2 games, when I was up 4/1 which were seemingly endless…Una won the first when I was serving and I rallied from 0-40 to win the 4/2 game. It was a 1:40 long match (including the brief warmup).

Much later, around 3pm, Bunnie and I played, and won, a tour 2.5 hour doubles match over Betsy Savitt/Purcell to win the gold balls. It was very windy…tough conditions. We won 63 46 64, finishing just before sundown.

In the 60s, Vicki Buholz won the singles over Jenny Rens, 64 ret but the two finalists teamed up in doubles to beat Sylvia Kodsi/Ellen Markowitz 61 76(8). The second set featured too many fantastic points to count with Buholz and Rens smothering the net. Markowitz took bronze over Anna Zimmermann in singles while Kaleel/Charlton took the doubles bronze.

Sue Kimball beat her doubles partner Betty Wachob in straight sets to win the 80 singles. Kimball/Wachob then beat Brenda Carter/Sharon Greene to win the doubles gold (on Friday). Brenda Winstead/Carolann Castell won the doubles bronze over Carol Clay/Ellen Goodman. Carter took the singles bronze.

I won the 70 singles over Bunnie Jackson yesterday. The weather went from temperatures near freezing (including wind chill), necessitating a later start on Monday and Tuesday to hot and humid yesterday. Our match lasted nearly 2.5 hours and I won 63 76 (4). It was very windy and the second set was long and tough. Pat Purcell took bronze by default over Una Davis and Leslie Murveit beat Tina Karwasky 10-8 in a match tiebreak (after losing the first set 60) and Kathy Foulk to place fifth. This was one tough draw!

Many thanks to Trish Faulkner and her crew and the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center for their hospitality.

Next stop: Turkey, for the ITF Masters World Team Championships (near Manavgat), but first rest and packing up.
