The following is a statement from the Barbados Workers Union on today’s work stoppage by G4S staff at the Grantley Adams International Airport.
The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is gravely concerned about the ongoing cooling issues at Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) that have significantly impacted the health and well-being of G4S security personnel stationed at the facility. This afternoon, as temperatures soared to unbearable levels, fifteen G4S workers were compelled to withdraw their labour in the best interest of their health. This situation is neither sudden nor surprising, as BWU has repeatedly highlighted the intolerable working conditions caused by the malfunctioning air conditioning system.
This incident occurred during a shift change, involving workers from two separate shifts. Despite their dedication and resilience, these workers, who have been contending with this issue for well over a year, could no longer endure the hazardous conditions. Their decision to temporarily cease work was not a reckless act, but a necessary response to the extreme heat that jeopardised their health.
It is worth noting that while technicians were called in to address the malfunctioning air conditioning, GAIA security personnel stepped in to ensure that operations were not disrupted. During this period, GAIA management augmented the cooling system by introducing an additional fan and providing their security team with water—actions that reflect a stark contrast to the conditions endured by the G4S workers.
In a positive development, we are pleased to confirm that G4S has now agreed to provide water for their staff moving forward. However, it is deeply troubling that this basic provision, which is essential for workers’ well-being, was not implemented earlier.
Once the area was sufficiently cooled, the G4S workers resumed their duties. However, it is important to emphasize that as soon as the workers returned, the extra fan provided by GAIA was removed. This action raises serious concerns about the long-term commitment to resolving the cooling issues that have plagued this work area.
The BWU urges GAIA management to take immediate and decisive action to permanently fix the air conditioning system in this area. The current reduction in traffic has temporarily alleviated the heat. However, with the traditionally warmer months upon us and the potential for increased airport activity, there is a real and justifiable fear that this problem will resurface, once again endangering the health of G4S workers.
It is unacceptable that G4S security personnel are unable to bring their water into the area due to security protocols, making it even more critical that GAIA ensures adequate cooling and hydration measures are in place. These workers have shown unwavering commitment despite the challenging conditions they face daily. They deserve a safe and comfortable working environment. While we advocate for the G4S workers today, we must also note that these complaints of heat have also come from our members at Duty-Free Caribbean as well as Customs. The Barbados Workers’ Union stands firmly with the G4S workers and will continue to advocate for their rights and well-being. We call on Grantley Adams International Airport to prioritise the health and safety of all workers by resolving this issue without delay.
