The Flames crawled back to the .500 mark (though they dipped one game below after last night’s loss), but with Zayne Parekh and Cole Reschny playing well at the World Juniors, the Flames look to be in a good position for 2026. This is a sentence most Flames fans never expected to hear this season but, well, anything is possible.
Let’s take a look at everything Calgary Flames prospects.
Welcome to the TWC Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Calgary’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.
What New Years Resolutions Might Flames Prospects have?
Arsenii Sergeev: To earn a season long call up to the Calgary Wranglers and prove his skill.
Zayne Parekh: To make Ryan Huska regret his previous coaching decisions and allow Parekh to earn his ice time.
Hunter Brzustewicz: For an Anderson trade, so he can cement a full-time roster spot with the Flames.
Eric Jamieson: To continue building his two-way game in Denver, and be a full three-zone threat.
Cullen Potter: To have a stellar sophomore season with ASU and make Team USA brass regret not selecting him for this past World Juniors.
Cole Reschny: Bring WJC gold back, and continue to work on elevating his physicality and skating.
Calgary Flames prospect updates
AHL
- The Wranglers are on a slide as they have gone 1–1–2 since Christmas. They lost their game on the 27th to the Roadrunners, then collected an OTL point against that same team the next day. Calgary then split a pair of OT games against the Colorado Eagles, losing their first matchup on the 30th and securing their first win of 2026 on the 1st.
- The Calgary Wranglers are tied for 2nd in the AHL’s Pacific Division, with a 15–11–8 record and 38 points.
- Forward William Stromgren is on a run post-Christmas, collecting four goals and four assists in his last three games alone.
- 2005 born forward Andrew Basha was reassigned from the Wranglers to the WHL on January 1st.
ECHL
- The Rapid City Rush are back to playing after the end of the ECHL’s players’ strike earlier this week.
- The Rush only played a single game since the 21st. It was a 4–3 win versus the Tahoe Knight Monsters on the 31st.
- There are no Calgary Flames-affiliated prospects in the organization.
- Forward Johnny Curran left the Rush officially on the 23rd for a contract with the Nottingham Panthers. Goaltender Rico DiMatteo has joined on a loan from the SPHL’s Pensacola Ice Flyers on the 29th. Defender Brady Keeper joins the team from the South Carolina Stingrays on the 29th as well.
NCAA
- Mace’o Phillips made his return to USHL action this past week, after almost a month long absence. He played the Dubuque Fighting Saints on the 27th and 29th, and the Madison Capitols on the 31st, and the Lumberjacks continue to win with Phillips in the lineup as they are on a 9-game streak.
- Ethan Wyttenbach started the new year off strong with a goal against Harvard University in Quinnipiac’s 9–1 blowout of the Ivy League school on the 2nd.
- Cullen Potter appeared in a pair of games against Dartmouth College on the 27th and 28th. Across the weekend, the Flames’ 2025 1st-rounder posted two goals and an assist. Potter blends electrifying top speed with senses and puck skills to generate consistent quick pace chances for ASU.
OHL
- Battaglia has been a busy forward, appearing in four games and posting just as many points since the last prospect update. Battaglia absorbs and suckers in pressure, while blending higher-end creativity to make skillful, and unexpected plays that often result in his name on the scoresheet.
WHL
- Calgary Wranglers 2005 born forward, and Flames 2024 2nd rounder, Andrew Basha, has been reassigned from the AHL to the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL on the 2nd.In his first game back on the 2nd, Basha secured the Tigers’ 6th goal against the Moose Jaw Warriors in a 6–3 win.
- Hunter Laing and the Blades are on a post-Christmas three game winning streak. He’s collected a goal and an assist in that span.
Russia
- Zarubin has appeared in only one game since the last prospect update. A 4–3 win against MHK Krylia Sovetov Moskva on the 28th, where he stopped 27/30 shots.
