Campbell coach John Andrzejek cites school’s ‘different priorities,’ leaves for Louisville staff

Campbell University men’s basketball head coach John Andrzejek stepped down after one season on Wednesday to take an assistant job at Louisville, saying Campbell had shifted its commitments away from basketball amid new challenges in higher education.

Andrzejek went 16-18 in his first season as the Fighting Camels’ head coach with an 8-10 record in the Coastal Athletic Association. He was previously an assistant at Florida for two years, where he was a part of the 2025 national championship staff.

“Over the last six months, it has become clear that Campbell has made the decision to shift their commitment from basketball,” he wrote in a statement posted on social media. “Simply put — the institution now has different priorities, and they are not compatible with putting the kind of team on the floor that you deserve. As difficult as this is, I respect the decision and understand it as one that the university feels it must make in what are unprecedented times in higher education.

“Despite months of intense work and collaboration with AD Hannah Bazemore and our terrific athletics administration, and several creative options that were proposed and thoroughly explored, there are no pathways that the institution will support to fund the program appropriately moving forward.”

While Andrzejek did not specify where funding had instead gone, the school has increased its commitment to football, which is in the Football Championship Subdivision, in recent years. In 2018, the program transitioned from the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League to the scholarship Big South. The Camels then moved all sports to the CAA in 2023. The football team went 2-10 this past season.

“Campbell is grateful for coach Andrzejek and his leadership over the last year with our men’s basketball program and wishes him the best going forward,” the school said in a statement. “A national search for Campbell’s next head coach will begin immediately.”
