Can Pakistan Survive T20 World Cup 2026 Without Playing India?

The ongoing situation between India and Pakistan has created questions about Pakistan’s chances to reach the T20 World Cup knockout stages. The Pakistan government ordered its national team to skip their Group A match against their main sporting and political opponent scheduled for February 15 which became a worldwide cricketing scandal. The announcement took place immediately after Pakistan achieved a 3-0 victory over Australia which was a title contender during their last tournament preparation match in Lahore.

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha explained their powerlessness to execute the boycott because he said “we cannot do anything about the decision”. “We will execute all tasks which our government and the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman assign to us.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday confirmed the boycott was a way of showing solidarity with Bangladesh after it was removed from the World Cup.

Pakistan’s Group A Opponents and Equations

The United States stands as Pakistan’s second opponent in their group matches because the United States eliminated Pakistan from the 2024 World Cup during a Super Over match in Texas. The U.S. game included six players who participated, including Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The Netherlands became famous for its ability to defeat stronger teams when it beat South Africa during the 2022 season. Namibia is the other team in the group. If Pakistan goes ahead with the boycott, they must win every remaining group match. Rain forecasts exist for Sri Lanka, which will host all Pakistani matches during the tournament.

Pakistan’s performance has improved since New Zealander Mike Hesson became their coach in 2021. He established a competitive playing style which enables his team to face better T20 cricketing nations.

Agha demonstrated his batting aggressiveness during both series when he played at the third batting position against Australia and Sri Lanka. Babar Azam’s subpar batting performance produced a 128.38 strike rate which caused the leading T20 run-scorer to miss most of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup preparations until his October recall for the South Africa home series.

Babar’s experience on slow pitches earned him a place in the squad despite scoring only 202 runs in 11 games for the Sydney Sixers in Australia’s Big Bash League. Pakistan will field Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan as their starting opening combination while Babar will bat at No. 4 to lead the team’s innings.

Pakistan will play its complete schedule of matches in Sri Lanka which includes both semifinal and final matches if the team progresses. Pakistan selected a team of 15 players who will compete in matches that will probably favor spin bowlers.
