Canadiens Prospect Michael Hage Returning to Michigan: Now What?

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, “Hearing that Michael Hage, the talented Canadiens’ prospect, will return to Michigan for his junior season. Wolverines lost in Frozen Four this week, Hage will have another chance in 2026-27.” This news will come as a surprise to many as it was only a couple of day ago that reporter Eric Engels tweeted, “Michael Hage’s college season is over. Strong chance his college career is done, too. We’ll see what the next couple days bring.”

Earlier on Saturday, Marco D’Amico reported, “While mulling over the options for next season, hearing a return to Michigan remains a possibility for Michael Hage. That being said, it wouldn’t be due to any potential knock on relationship with MTL. But both sides weighing the opportunity/developmental curve for the player.” D’Amico also added, “This is a big decision for Michael to circle back. Habs fans will be frustrated, but Hage will be plug-and-play for MTL next yr after more seasoning.”

So, it’s less about Hage not wanting to come to the Canadiens and more about his desire to try and win in Michigan following their loss this week.

Some are questioning his decision, arguing that he has nothing left to accomplish in college. Some wonder if he would be better developed by playing 12-14 mins a night for 80+ games in the NHL. That said, there is no guarantee that would Montreal’s plan for him.

Cam Robinson writes, “The Michael Hage news may appear surprising, but he’s not NHL-ready yet, and Montreal is full. Go back, play a junior season, try for a natty, and come out fully ready to go. Players and advisors are looking for ways to avoid the AHL if possible. An extra college season does that.”

Some will wonder if this development will lead to a potential trade.
