Catholic Monks booked their place in the KRU Championship semi-finals following a 21-8 win over NYS Spades in a playoff match played at CUEA Grounds in Karen.
Heading into the clash, Monks were determined to correct last season’s shortcomings and push for a return to the top tier, while NYS Spades were enjoying their debut campaign after earning early promotion.
Brian Nyamboki opened the scoring for Monks with a try to hand them a 5-0 lead. Timothy Ochieng then extended the advantage to 8-0 after slotting in a penalty.
Ian Bakari added a second try for Monks, with Ochieng successfully converting to give them a comfortable 15-0 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, Monks added two penalties to their tally while NYS Spades responded with a try and a penalty, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit as Monks sealed a 21-8 victory.
EDITOR’S PICKS:
In Diani, Homeboyz stunned South Coast Pirates with a 29-20 win to keep their hopes of promotion alive while ending Pirates’ chances of an immediate return to the top tier.
Pirates had gone into the clash as favourites, with JKUAT Cougars the only side to have beaten them in Diani this season. They had also defeated Homeboyz 46-24 during the regular season in Nairobi.
However, Homeboyz turned the tables in emphatic fashion, securing a famous win on the road and moving a step closer to Kenya Cup promotion.
